Facts & Trivia about Norwich City Football Club.

The Nest

The Club was formed in 1902 and originally played at Newmarket Road until the crowds grew to large. They then moved to the The Nest (See B&W photo), an old chalk pit. But again the FA was concerned over the safety as the crowds grew larger still. In 1935 they built a stadium at Carrow Road in just 82 days!!

Our chant “On the Ball City” is the oldest in the World, still sung Loud & Proud today, and was actually written in 1890 for an amateur Norwich club, probably Caleys FC. but was adopted by NCFC.

Chorus:

Kick off, throw in, have a little scrimmage,

Keep it low, a splendid rush, bravo, win or die;
On the ball City, never mind the danger,
Steady on, now’s your chance,
Hurrah! We’ve scored a goal,

City! City! City!

Who would have thought that in 1902 the players actually played in Blue/White and were nicknamed the Cits (Citizens). Canary breeding was very popular in Norwich, having been introduced by Danish settlers in the 16th century, and the new Manager in 1905 stated he had heard the Canaries singing. The Press began nicknaming the team the Canaries so in 1907 they adopted the Yellow/Green kits, however the simple Canary badge did not appear until 1922.

NCFC is the only professional football club in Norfolk, therefore the fanbase catchment is wide.

The Premier League was formed in 1992-93 season and Norwich became the surprising title chasers after being top most of that season. However they faltered towards the end and finished Third after Manu Utd & Aston Villa.

NCFC have qualified to play in the UEFA Cup 4 times but could only enter once due to UEFAs ban on English Clubs at that time. NCFC are the only British club to beat Bayern Munich away at the Olympic Stadium, after Jeremy Goss’s stunning winning volley goal in 93-94 season.
