With City status granted in the 14th Century, the Lion & Castle emblem started to appear on civic & religious buildings, with many artistic interpretations.
Norwich Castle is over 900 years old and the Normans began construction soon after William the Conqueror arrived in England.
The Lion symbol became popular with the Monarchy, presumably linked to Richard the Lionheart, and remains so today.
Why these were chosen to represent Norwich, we do not know as there are no records, but the emblem has been found on medieval documents.
